Hi everyone! Thanks for visiting this site which is dedicated to raising money for the Humane Society of Charlotte through my half marathon run. My good friend Stacey and I are currently training for the Kentucky Derby Half Marathon in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday April 24, 2010. I will be running to benefit the animals at the Humane Society of Charlotte.

Please give if you can or just find out more about how you might help the Humane Society with in-kind donations (goods or services), or even by volunteering. Or just enjoy reading about the experience.

Donate
(READ BEFORE DONATING: In the "How did you hear about us" field, PLEASE SELECT "Other" and in the "If Other" field - enter "Sharon Walters")

Here are some interesting facts about what your donation can do:
  • $25 will feed four hungry kittens for one week.
  • $50 will provide a warm bed for dogs in their kennel.
  • $75 will pay for spay/neuter surgery to prevent more homeless animals.
See more examples on the Humane Society of Charlotte website.

If you have any interest, from time to time, I'll update this site with updates on our training progress. As of the first week of February, we are currently working on 9 miles as a long run, running 4 times a week. Our training takes us up to 12 miles a few weeks before the half marathon. Of course after the race, I'll post our results and some pictures.

Thanks again for visiting.

A great trip & great race... minus the 4am fire alarm

First I want to say thanks for the support during training. We had a great run on Sat. April 24th in Louisville and the severe weather even held off. We finished our 1/2 marathon in about 2:38 which was a little slower than expected but we are still very proud for finishing.

A quick run down of a great weekend:
-Drove 8 hours on Friday, picked up race packets and got to bed at a decent hour (Stacey & Justin weren't so lucky as they had to drive down after work).
-Someone thought it would be funny to pull the fire alarm at the hotel at 4am (spent 30 minutes outside waiting for the fireman to clear the hotel (but this was a good time for breakfast anyway).
-Up at 5:30am - race began at 7:30am.
-High points of the race... running through Churchill Downs between mile 7 and 8 & when Justin yelled to us from the sidewalk that the finish line was .10 from the corner. (Thank you Justin!)
-Cheered the marathoners on mile 20, while enjoying a celebratory Corona (sorry full Marathoners).

That about does it. It was so much fun and Louisville, KY is a beautiful town.

Thanks again for the support and here's to the animals at the HSUS.

Derby Festival Half Marathon in just 8 days

Finished my first 12 mile run last Sunday morning - and that last 3 miles is going to be rough! But the good news is - the first 10 were not bad. I'm looking forward to our trip and run in Louisville in 8 days. See the race route and morning schedule at http://www.derbyfestivalmarathon.com/asset22391.aspx?method=1. Thanks again for the support!
